Frequently asked questions
Short answers, with the exact wording from our legal documents where the answer is something we promise. Those documents govern; this page summarizes them.
- Is YearWise a tax preparer? Does it file my return?
No.
“TaxMint is not a law firm, a certified public accounting (CPA) firm, a registered tax preparer, or a financial advisory firm.”
Disclaimer §1 “Using TaxMint does not constitute the filing of a tax return with the IRS or any state taxing authority. You remain solely responsible for filing all legally required tax returns on time and accurately, and for paying all taxes owed.”
Disclaimer §4 Electronic filing is not currently offered. The Service models and explains your position, and the return itself is filed with a tax professional or filing software.
“TaxMint does not currently support electronic filing of tax returns.”
Terms of Service §2 - Is this tax advice?
No. The Tax & Legal Disclaimer lists what use of the Service does not create, beginning with:
“A fiduciary, advisory, or professional-client relationship.”
Disclaimer §1 Results are estimates, intended to be reviewed with a qualified tax professional:
“All results are mathematical hypotheses based on user-provided data and current tax logic.”
Terms of Service §3 - How accurate are the numbers?
The tax engine is deterministic: the same inputs produce the same result every time, and the arithmetic behind every figure is visible in the Service. Results are computed from the information you enter, so their accuracy follows from it:
“All results depend entirely on the accuracy of the data you input.”
Disclaimer §3 Every computation is also validated independently, using YearWise's patent-pending verification method. The method re-derives each result from de-identified inputs and is designed to account for the known failure modes of AI models, including fabricated or inconsistent output. Any discrepancy is escalated for review by a person before it affects what you see, and known-answer cases are included in every validation run so that the validation itself is continuously checked.
No software is free of defects. The validation reduces the chance that an error reaches you; it does not eliminate it, and the documents you accept say so plainly: the Service is provided without a warranty that any calculation is accurate or complete. The results are estimates for planning, and
“Verify all results with a qualified tax professional (CPA, Enrolled Agent, or tax attorney) before filing any return.”
Disclaimer §5 - Where does AI come in? Does an AI compute my taxes?
No. The figures you see are produced by the deterministic engine; no AI model is part of that calculation. AI is applied afterwards, as an independent check: it recomputes each result and flags any discrepancy for review, and it never produces the figure shown to you.
“The Service uses AI for the OBBBA tax auditor and related verification flows.”
Privacy Policy §4 The provider is Google Gemini, accessed through Google Vertex AI, and:
“Personal identifiers — names, SSNs, EINs, email addresses, phone numbers, family ID, and physical addresses — are removed before any prompt is sent.”
Privacy Policy §4 - Is my data used to train AI models?
No.
“Our Vertex AI configuration prohibits use of your data to train public models.”
Privacy Policy §4 The same commitment applies to every AI processor named in the Privacy Policy.
- Which states are supported?
Federal tax is modeled for residents of every state. State income tax is modeled for the states listed on the supported states page; for other states the Service presents the state-level result as "not modeled" rather than an estimate.
“for states not yet supported, the Service computes federal results and presents state-level results as "not modeled."”
Disclaimer §3 - Who can see my data? Can YearWise employees read my return?
No. Access to your data by YearWise staff occurs only when you grant it, and every access is recorded.
“When you submit a bug report, you may grant our support team explicit data access via the "Allow support team to access my data for 7 days" checkbox.”
Privacy Policy §11 The grant is opt-in, expires after 7 days, and can be revoked from your dashboard at any time.
“Support access to your data is available only through the break-glass consent flow described in §11, is routed through a single audited code path, and is logged before any data is read.”
Privacy Policy §5 - How is my data protected?
“Each of these fields is encrypted at the field level immediately upon receipt using AES-256-GCM.”
Privacy Policy §2.1 Encryption keys are held in Google Cloud KMS. Uploaded documents are parsed and then deleted:
“Source documents are never written to long-term storage or local database tables.”
Privacy Policy §2.4 The complete security posture, including the controls not yet in force, is published on the security page.
- What happens when I delete my account?
Deletion takes effect immediately across every system we operate.
“When you delete your account, we remove your data from live systems immediately and crypto-shred all encryption keys associated with your account.”
Privacy Policy §6.1 Your sign-in identity is removed with it, any subscription ends at once, and our billing records follow:
“Cancels any active subscription immediately”
Terms of Service §6 “When you delete your account, we delete billing records linked to your account in our systems immediately.”
Privacy Policy §6.2 Two records persist beyond that point, as the Privacy Policy states. Backups:
“A backup taken before you deleted your account contains your data and its encryption keys as they were at that moment,”
Privacy Policy §6.3 and those backups are replaced on a rolling cycle of:
“up to 30 daily database backups, plus seven days of point-in-time recovery logs”
Privacy Policy §6.3 And the payment processor's own records:
“Stripe retains its own independent payment records subject to its retention policy (typically 7 years per its commercial terms); contact Stripe directly to request deletion of those records.”
Privacy Policy §6.2 “Account deletion is irreversible.”
Terms of Service §6 - Is the beta free? Will I be charged?
During the closed beta the Service is provided without charge and no payment method is collected. You will be informed before any charge is introduced, and no charge is made without your consent.
- How do I sign in? Is Apple sign-in available?
Sign-in is with a Google account today:
“via Google sign-in or, where available, Sign in with Apple.”
Privacy Policy §2.1 Sign in with Apple follows the publication of the mobile applications.
- Can my spouse or my CPA use it with me?
Joint filers can be invited together during the beta, and a CPA of your choosing can be linked to your workspace.
“Data authored by a tax professional you have linked to your account (their private strategy notes and professional-to-client messages) is treated as their work product and is not included in the automated export.”
Privacy Policy §7 - I joined the waitlist by mistake, or with the wrong email. How do I get removed?
Email privacy@taxmint.ai from any address and state the address you entered; it will be removed.
- How do I report a security problem?
Email security@taxmint.ai. Our disclosure policy, including the acknowledgment commitment and the safe-harbor statement, is on the security page, which also links the machine-readable security.txt.
